i wonder what is the average number of homes people live in throughout their adult lives: my siblings have all lived in their homes for periods of 40 years more or less, just as my parents did. counting the 10 homes i purchased, even discounting 6 rentals in the UK and 1 overseas, i assuredly plunged the family average down!

however all these homes have helped me to enjoy many experiences in different ways; using diy with 1970 Laura Ashley matching fabric & wallpapers in a 200 y.o. sussex hung-tiled smallholders’ cottage or decorating with smart sanderson 1980 fabric for blinds (sewing machine at the ready) in a modern suburban surrey townhouse.
when wallpaper went out of fashion my next efforts concentrated on redesigning layouts: converting a double garage into a playroom/ spare bedroom with en suite bathroom in a wooden-frame family home in a large village on the edge of the new forest.
much further down the line i took on a delapidated georgian house c.1714 en route to the west country. it needed a total renovation from roof to ground level, opening as a b&b after six months, including a substantial garden remodel (although i cannot claim to have landscape designer qualifications).

ultimately i moved to builder/designer territory by rebuilding the georgian coachouse, at the end of the property, into a new 2 storey home capable of supporting me in transition from enabled to imminent disabled living.

which, of course, led onto the desire to build my own home….
